The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
