The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
