The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
