Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in a change of corporate structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake approximately five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and CEO should the deal proceed.

Ownership Structure

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who each also own one-third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The management structure of the team stays unchanged, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Financial Increase

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group bought its stake for £208 million in 2022.

The rise reflects the expansion in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years due to the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and has grossed more than $630m (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the most successful sports movie ever released.

Present Standings

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left this season.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races so far and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a unprecedented eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
