Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state early analysis show the substance was likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are currently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior representative stated the attack rendered him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a shooter targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
